Catherine McKenzie began her legal career as a legal secretary in 1972, at the age of 20, for a Federal non-profit law services committee on Long Island, New York. In her capacity as legal secretary she was part of the team that propelled a case to the United States Supreme Court. She then was employed by many and varied law departments and firms in New York City, San Francisco, Augusta (GA), Tallahassee, and, finally, in her present residence, Vero Beach, Florida. All of these opportunities trained her in areas such as tax litigation, union/labor law, estate planning, probate, real estate, family and criminal law.
In 1993, Catherine accepted the job of Legal Secretary I with the City Attorney’s Office of the City of Vero Beach. She then progressed quickly to Legal Secretary II, and, after being trained, mentored and supervised by a member of the Florida Bar, in 2001 she met the requirements necessary to obtain the title of Paralegal. In 2006, Catherine was promoted to the position of Senior Paralegal.
As a municipal paralegal, Catherine had to learn many new facets of law, including Florida’s stringent Government-in-the-Sunshine Law, that requires all state, county, local government, and other state agencies to conduct business

Job Title: Advanced Certified Paralegal
Employer: Stibbs & Co., P.C., Spring, Texas
Years of Paralegal Experience: 11 years
Education/Degrees: Paralegal Certificate 1992 – Texas School of Business; Certified Paralegal 2008 – National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA); Advanced Certified Paralegal 2009 – NALA
Specialty Areas: Global Business Law, Energy Law, Mergers & Acquisitions, Estate Planning and Probate
Career Highlight: I love working for a small firm where everyone treats each other like a person and not someone that is “beneath” them. Case in point, our firm was involved in a multimillion dollar company merger with a large firm on the other side. I attended the closing which lasted most of the day. I was included in all meetings and went to lunch with the clients and the attorneys. The other side had a “baby lawyer” that the other attorneys kept ordering around to move boxes, shuffle papers, label documents for signing, etc. That poor baby lawyer wasn’t involved in any of the fun stuff and they had worked on the merger just as much as everyone else. He was just a cog in their firm, not a part of the team. It was sad that he was treated as a lesser person by his peers. I am fortunate that I am appreciated at my firm, and I don’t take that for granted.
Paralegal Practice Tip: Always ASK when a project/task is due and which client is to be billed.
Favorite Internet Resource: I absolutely love South Texas College of Law professor, Mark E. Steiner’s, links to every legal site you could possibly need: www.stcl.edu/faculty_pages/faculty_folders/steiner/internet_links_for_lawyers.htm
Do you use social media resources, such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter or blogs, for career and/or case development?
I’m beginning to learn how to use LinkedIn. What I find most helpful and enjoyable is the State Bar of Texas Paralegal Division E-Group. There are questions posted regarding all areas of law, how to handle specific situations, looking for forms to use, surveys and humor to brighten our day. It is amazing to see how awesome my peers are on a daily basis. I also enjoy knowing I’m not the only person who struggles with some of the same issues.
Fun Fact: I changed schools ten different times from kindergarten to twelfth grade.
One Thing You Can’t Live Without: My children – they are a true blessing in my life.
Favorite Quote: “You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.”

As I reviewed my annual Paralegal Division Invoice for continued membership in the North Carolina Bar Association, I realized that annual $50 fee is a darn good value. All members, including paralegals, get free, unlimited access to CaseMaker (http://www.casemaker.us/)
In addition to state and federal case law, statutes and court rules, Casemaker has other great resources for paralegals, including:
Journal of Law and TechnologyCity Codes for Winston-Salem, Charlotte, Durham, Greensboro and RaleighPattern Jury InstructionsLegal Forms (Charges vary per form, but you can see sample PDFs at no charge)NCBA Legal UpdatesAttorney General opinions
While many firms do pay for premium level legal research systems, Casemaker, Fastcase, and Loislaw are popular alternatives. Many bar associations offer free unlimited access to either Casemaker or Fastcase as a benefit of membership. I’m proud to be a member of a bar association that extends this benefit to all members, not just attorneys.
You can find the online Membership Application for paralegals and paralegal students here.
