Mesothelioma: Did You Know?

Jul 23rd, 2008 by Traffic

People who have mesothelioma are usually treated with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or surgery. (See: mesothelioma case)

These are typically used in conjunction with chemotherapy or radiation after a surgical procedure. Surgery is usually only an option if the mesothelioma is detected before it spreads throughout the body.

Chemotherapy is a treatment that attacks mesothelioma by killing the afflicted cells. As with its use in the treatment of other forms of cancer, chemotherapy also kills healthy cells, causing the side effects that many people associate with the treatment. The new chemotherapy drugs being developed offer a far more positive effect than most older drugs.

Radiation is used to limit the spread of mesothelioma. This is frequently used after an operation, but sometimes it is used just for ordinary pain relief. Rarely does radiation give patients anything other than short-term relief from their symptoms.
